Tomorrow

Throughout the forest below the picnic area were acacias festooned in what I thought were insect galls. But they are apparently caused by a rust fungus, and insects then make enthusiastic use of them. See Rust fungus

Tomorrow I give my presentation of my thesis...
Ann has wished me luck. Ruth has given me a home. And Kerrie remains her unflappable, helpful self.

Mt Coot-tha

Ficus auriculata IMG_1347
Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

My last days here in the apartment at Women's College. I got my sister to come down and spend a night here, and we went to the gardens.

The base of the fig looked to be garlanded in flowers (which of course it was).

Thought I would do the right thing and be sociable, so I went to the so-called "PostGrads dinner". A lamentable affair. Paid for from school postgraduate funds to the tune of $20 per student, and no-one was prepared (could afford?) to take it further. No grog, and young and full-of-themselves maths boys showing off/out-trumping each other. Now, we stats postgrads do ourselves far better: Fridays we go to one of a number of pubs, buy jars of beer, drink, get chips, buy more beer and get to know each other. A far more satisfactory arrangement.

Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens

Caryota mitis IMG_9492
Clumping Fish-Tail Palm

Trying to explore Brisbane. Took the 8 mile plains bus (169), from UQ lakes yesterday and found Garden City (shopping mall). Bought some pillowcases and a mug. Both needed here. Today, I found my way to Mt Coot-tha. The Botanic Gardens are lovely and I need to go again to explore some more.

There were many amazing plants, but this one took my fancy to summarise my visit.
